Horace Andy (Horace Hinds, born 1951 in Kingston) reaches the top of the charts with his songs ‘Skylarking‘ (1972) and ‘You Are My Angel‘ (1973). He reigns over reggae-dub with his distinctive voice and singing style during the next decade and settles in London UK in 1985 where his 1990-2010 collaboration with Massive Attack is a revelation.

Michel Sardou incarne la chanson-variété française dans les années 70 et 80. Durant ces 20 ans de francophonie, même ceux qui n’aimaient pas le chanteur Michel Sardou le connaissaient par cœur, tant ses chansons sont médiatisées et ses paroles simples, uniques et inoubliable. C’est notamment le cas des quatre phrases… « Si les ricains étaient pas là, Vous seriez tous en Germanie » (1967) ; ou « On est là pour boire un coup, (..) Et pour se reboire un coup, Et pas payer nos verres » (1970) ; ou « Mais voilà, j’habite en France, (..) Où y a quand-même pas 50 millions d’abrutis » (1970) ; et « Le rire du sergent, La folle du régiment, La préférée du capitaine des Dragons » (1971) . Là où on pouvait croire à l’effet de mode, il s’avéra que le jeune Sardou avait la science du cabaret, une voix d’enfer, sa propre poésie originale et s’appuyait sur de belles musiques. La tragédie que clame son extraordinaire titre ‘Le surveillant général‘ (1972) marque à nouveau les esprits et sa chanson ‘La Maladie d’amour’ (1973) acquiert instantanément le statut de grand classique. Entre 1970 et 2000, les singles de Michel Sardou atteignent 50 fois les hauts du hit-parade français.

Michel Sardou embodies the popular French-song in the 70s and 80s. During these 20 years of ‘Musique-variété’, even those who do not like the singer Michel Sardou know his opus by heart, as his songs are massively broadcast and as his lyrics are immediately unforgettable, e.g. as in the four sentences … “If the Ricans hadn’t been there, you would all be in Germania“; or “We’re here for a drink, (..) And for another drink, And for not paying those drinks“; or “But here it is, I live in France, (..) Where there’s still not 50 million morons”; or “The Sergeant’s Laughter, The Madwoman of the Regiment, The favourite of the Captain of the Dragoons”. What might’ve been a fashion fad turned into a demonstration by the young Sardou, with cabaret mastery, original poetry, beautiful tunes and a hellish voice. The tragedy proclaimed by his extraordinary track “Le surveillant général” (1972, The general supervisor) once again struck people’s minds, while his song ‘La Maladie d’amour’ (1973) acquired the status of great classic upon its release. Between 1970 and 2000, Michel Sardou’s singles reached 50 times the heights of the French charts.

Cecilia (Evangelina ‘Eva’ Sobredo Galanes, Madrid, 1948-1976) embraces her stage-name as a tribute to the song ‘Cecilia’ (1970) by Simon & Garfunkel. She leads a stellar singer-songwriter career in Spain and Latin America before dying at the age of 27 in a car accident at night with her group on their 600km trip back to Madrid after a concert in Vigo. Cecilia releases 44 songs in 11 singles and three studio LP albums between 1971 and 1976. Seven more of her unreleased songs are published several years later.

Cecilia (Evangelina ‘Eva’ Sobredo Galanes, Madrid, 1948-1976) adopta su nombre artístico en homenaje a la canción ‘Cecilia’ (1970) de Simon & Garfunkel. Lidera una carrera de cantautora estelar en España y América Latina antes de fallecer a los 27 años en un accidente automovilístico, por la noche con su grupo en el viaje de 600 km de regreso a Madrid después de un concierto en Vigo. Cecilia lanza 44 canciones en 11 sencillos y tres LP de estudio entre 1971 y 1976. Siete de sus canciones inéditas se publican varios años después.

An icon of the musica leggera italiana of the 70s, she later turns to disco and then synth-pop in the 80s and to indie pop-rock at the end of the 90s. She released her 22nd studio LP album in early 2019, fifty years after her first one.

In addition to achieving success in his solo career, Neil Young has been a member of the two legendary bands Buffalo Springfield (1966-68) and Crosby Stills Nash & Young (CSNY, 1970-71).  At the age of 27, upon the release of his fourth solo LP “Harvest” (1972), he became a living legend of American folk and country-rock . During his 55 years career from 1966 to 2021, he recorded nearly 500 songs in more than 40 studio albums, with the song Goin’ Home (2002) as the climax of the latter part of his career. Neil Young’s most noticeable early appearances on TV came with the tracks ‘Mr Soul’ in 1967 and ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ in 1970, a song that was later covered by many artists included by Eurythmics’ singer Annie Lennox in 1995.

Gérard Manset (né en 1945, St Cloud, Paris) publie plus de 200 chansons en 23 albums LP studio entre 1968 et 2018, marquant les esprits à ses débuts avec ses singles ‘Animal on est mal‘ (1968) et ‘Il voyage en solitaire‘ (1975).   Trente-tros ans plus tard, il collabore avec Bashung qui publie 4 de ses compositions – dont ‘Comme un Légo‘ – dans son dernier LP ‘Bleu Pétrole’ (2008). De tendance pop d’avant-garde et art-rock, Manset est aussi peintre, photographe et écrivain. Il préserve sa vie privée, donne très peu d’interviews, jamais de concert et n’accompagne pas ses chansons de vidéoclips. Son œuvre musicale n’en est pas moins plébiscitée par ses pairs, de toutes époques confondues.

Serge Lama began singing in 1964 in the Brel-Brassens style of traditional French song. A talented lyricist with a powerful voice based on beautiful melodies, he experienced his golden age between 1968 and 1975 and  then pursued a rich, although more confidential, career. From 1964 to 2022, Serge Lama published nearly 300 original songs on 6 EPs, 22 studio LPs and 10 live albums.

FOLK USA & CANADA 1960s

Many songs of the Canadian poet and singer Leonard Cohen (1934 Quebec – 2016 Los Angeles) carry scents of perfection, like those composed during his 1960s stay in the beautiful little Saronic island of Hydra, Greece (cf. link), those of his comeback to mass success in 1984-92 or those of the 2001-2016 period, when Cohen was 67 to 82 years old. His discography of 15 studio albums includes the post-mortem LP ‘Thanks for the dance‘ (2019).
