Bulat Okudzhava (1924-1997) is the greatest Soviet bard. He was born in Moscow to a Armenian mother and a Georgian father who served as military officer but was executed during the great purge in 1937. Okudzhava’s first poems’ collection was published in 1956 and he began producing homemade recordings of his songs in 1957.

These were  distributed in the Soviet magnitizdat market where they became immensely popular in the 1960s. His first LP album was released by the French label ‘Le Chant du Monde‘ in 1968 but the first official Soviet release of his songs only took place in the late 70s. Okzudzhava wrote more than 200 songs, published 15 fiction books and collections of poems, and his songs appeared in 28 Soviet films.  He lived in Moscow, Georgia, Kaluga, Moscow again and died in Paris while travelling.
